Accelerated Resolution Therapy
What If You Could Change How a Memory Feels?
You don't have to keep reliving the past to heal from it. If painful memories, trauma, anxiety, or depression have been holding you back, Accelerated Resolution Therapy® (ART) may offer the relief you've been looking for (often faster than you'd expect).
What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?
ART is a brief, structured psychotherapy that helps people resolve distressing memories and symptoms by reprocessing how those memories are stored in the brain; often in as little as one session. ART integrates eye-movement techniques with image rescripting to reduce emotional and physiological reactivity while clients stay in control throughout the process. Through ART, clients are able to erase negative images associated with memories, resulting in the elimination of corresponding triggers while preserving the factual memory.
How Does ART Work?
When we recall an emotionally based memory, a natural process occurs in the brain called Memory Reconsolidation — a window of time during which the memory becomes malleable. ART takes advantage of this natural process, using guided eye movements to help you consciously replace troubling images with ones that feel peaceful or neutral.
In simple terms: the facts of what happened don't change, but the emotional charge attached to them can. ART not only works to extinguish the fear response, it also helps unwire distressing emotions from the factual memories of the events that caused them.
What Can ART Help With?
ART has been shown to be effective for a wide range of concerns, including:
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Anxiety and panic
- Depression
- Grief and loss
- Sleep disturbances and nightmares
- Low self-esteem
- Substance use and addiction
- Phobias
- Life transitions and adjustment difficulties
Does It Actually Work?
Peer-reviewed studies, including several randomized and controlled trials, have demonstrated that ART can significantly reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress (PTS) and related conditions. A landmark trial in Military Medicine (2013) found that ART produced large and clinically meaningful improvements in combat-related PTS symptoms, including among veterans who had previously undergone other evidence-based therapies without full resolution. Replication studies have since reported similar outcomes in both military and civilian populations.
Beyond PTS, ART has shown promise in addressing depression, anxiety, grief, phobias, and pain-related distress. Case reports also suggest potential benefits for sleep disturbance and somatic symptoms. Research continues to expand, including neurobiological investigations of ART’s mechanisms and its application in primary care.
You Don't Have to Stay Stuck.
If you've tried other approaches and still feel weighed down by the past, ART may offer something different. Together, we can work to loosen the grip that painful memories have on your daily life — and help you move forward feeling lighter, calmer, and more like yourself.
If you're ready to explore whether ART is right for you, I'd love to connect.
